Hot Like Mexico, Rejoice!

Lady Gaga seems to be getting more and more popular these days. Her songs are constantly on the radio, and her crazy videos have millions of views on Youtube. I actually like a lot of her music, even though some of it is a bit overplayed *cough* Telephone *cough*. One of the songs from her new CD was pretty hyped a month or two ago. It’s “Alejandro”, a song that made me giggle because at the time that was my neighbor’s name. (You can check out the song here if you have been living under a rock, and haven’t heard it yet.)

The reason that I bring this song up now, is that I came across an entertaining video while perusing youtube. It features Jesse Tyler Ferguson, singing his own version of Alejandro. (Jesse is one of the characters on the new TV show “Modern Family”.)

For those of you who are interested, definitely check out the first few episodes of Modern Family. It’s a comedy about a family, filmed as a mockumentary. I find it pretty funny, and I like that the family members actually represent characters that you really do find in families. None of that Leave it to Beaver nonsense.  Anyway, it’s always good for a laugh. Sometimes the second time around is even funnier. You can watch full episodes online at ABC. Let me know what you think!

Bye Mark Zuckerberg, It’s Been Nice.

I’ve just recently deactivated my facebook account. I’ve gained some free time from that decision, and I have decided to start this blog. I couldn’t really pick something to write about consistently, so I will probably write about whatever randomly comes to mind. I hope to write about things that I come across that interest me, and maybe I’ll spark some interest in other people.

Garçon, an order of Uni please.

When I was little I was a really picky eater. In the past few years, I’ve been trying my best to expand my horizons and try different foods. Just under a month ago, I went for some sushi with some friends at New Gen (it was the only sushi place still open on Bloor St. at that point in the night). Feeling more adventurous than usual, I challenged my friend to pick something crazy for me to try off of the menu. I’ve only been eating (and loving!) sushi for just over a year now, so I’m still new to a lot of it.

Sea Urchin

Cute little guy, isn't he?

My friend ordered uni, which is sea urchin sashimi. It’s a golden yellow colour, and looks kind of mushy. At first glance, it looks pretty gross. When you pick it up with chopsticks… it was even more difficult to imagine eating it. After some convincing from my friend, I put the uni in my mouth. I have to say, it was one of the most unique and strange tastes I have ever experienced. I still can’t quite decide if I liked it or not. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it enough to have more either. The uni just seems to melt in your mouth, and coats your entire tongue. The taste is very strong, and it almost sticks to your tongue for a while.  It creates a strange sensation in your mouth… almost a numb-like feeling.

If you’re up for the challenge, I’d definitely recommend trying it. It’s such an interesting taste, I can’t really describe it and do it justice. I looked it up online later, and discovered that the part of the sea urchin that is served in restaurants is usually the gonads. I’m glad my friend didn’t mention that I was eating the sea urchin’s sexual organs… that probably would have made it a little tougher to swallow!

A word of advice, if you do decide to go out and try Uni at a sushi restaurant, make sure it is served fresh. Apparently there is no taste worse than that of bad uni. Also, I’d recommend washing it down with a nice cold beer like we did. Water or tea just doesn’t do the trick, especially if you decide you hate the taste. Good luck!
